The "Silver Tsunami": Geriatric Trauma and Fragility
Demographics are the primary wind in the sails of this market. As the global population over 65 is expected to reach 1.5 billion by 2050, the incidence of fragility fractures in the extremities—particularly the proximal humerus (shoulder) and the distal radius (wrist)—is skyrocketing.
According to research from the Extremity Products Market, trauma products for the elderly hold a 35% market share. Osteoporotic bone presents a unique challenge: screws often won't hold in "soft" bone. This has led to the development of "Locked Plating" systems and "Cement-Augmented" screws, which provide a stable construct even in brittle bone.
In 2025, the industry is also focusing on "Orthogeriatric" co-management models. Fracture fixation products are being bundled with "Bone Health" services, where patients are automatically screened for osteoporosis and put on a pharmacological regimen to prevent the next fracture. This "holistic" approach is increasingly being mandated by value-based healthcare programs, rewarding manufacturers whose products contribute to a reduction in "re-fracture" rates.
