MMOexp WoW Classic 20th Anniversary: Mana and protection potions

Overpower is extremely strong early because crit chance is low. Investing two points into Improved Overpower ensures it crits often, making dodges extremely punishing for WoW Classic 20th Anniversary Gold enemies.

Mid-tree highlights:

Sweeping Strikes - massive cleave potential

Axe Specialization - early crit chance is invaluable

Mortal Strike - scales with weapon damage, not attack power

This is why Arms outperforms Fury early. Bloodthirst scales with attack power, which you don't have much of while leveling, whereas Mortal Strike benefits directly from big two-handed weapons.

After finishing Arms, points go into Fury for:

Crit chance

Piercing Howl (AOE slow)

Blood Craze (passive healing)

Enrage (damage boost after being crit)

This setup works exceptionally well for solo leveling, dungeons, and open-world PvP.

Essential Addons

Recommended addons include:

Weapon Swing Timer - absolutely required for hamstring kiting

AtlasLoot - plan dungeon weapon upgrades

Quest addons (optional)

Bag addons (optional)

Without a swing timer, hamstring kiting is nearly impossible to execute properly.

Final Thoughts

Warrior leveling in WoW Classic is demanding, but mastering techniques like hamstring kiting, stance macros, and weapon progression transforms the experience. Arms Warriors scale incredibly well with good weapons, dominate in PvP, and become powerful tanks and DPS in group content. Having enough WoW Classic Fresh Gold can also be very helpful.

Learn these fundamentals early, and Warrior leveling goes from painful to deeply satisfying.

Mages have always been one of the most iconic and powerful DPS classes in World of Warcraft Classic. On the surface, the class looks simple-cast Frostbolt, drink water, repeat-but truly pumping as a mage requires far more than binding spells to convenient keybinds. From race and profession choices to talent builds, gear optimization, rotations, and consumables, every decision adds up.

This guide breaks down everything you need to know to maximize your performance as a mage in WoW Classic, with a strong focus on PvE raiding in Phase 4 and beyond.

Best Races for Mage in Classic

Race selection only truly matters if your goal is maximum raid DPS. Having plenty of WoW Classic 20th Anniversary Gold can also be very helpful.

Alliance:

Gnome is the clear winner thanks to its 5% increased intellect, which scales with gear and translates into more mana and crit. Escape Artist is also extremely valuable in both PvE mechanics and PvP. Humans offer marginal PvP utility through Perception, but overall fall behind gnomes for raw performance.

Horde:

Trolls are the best PvE choice due to Berserking, which provides a powerful haste bonus. Undead excel in PvP thanks to Will of the Forsaken and Cannibalize, making them the preferred choice outside of strict raid optimization.

Bottom line: play what you enjoy-but if you want absolute top-tier DPS, gnome or troll is the answer.

Professions: Non-Negotiable Choices

For mages, Tailoring and Engineering are mandatory.

Tailoring unlocks powerful crafted gear like the Bloodvine set, which remains best-in-slot deep into Classic and even relevant in early TBC.

Engineering provides bombs, gadgets, and utilities that no other profession can compete with in raids or PvP.

No other professions come close in terms of performance impact.

Mage Talent Builds Explained

Thanks to dual spec, mages can fully optimize their builds depending on content.

Fire Raiding Spec

This is the go-to build for most Phase 4 raids. It focuses on deep Fire talents while dipping into Frost for hit chance and Arcane for mana efficiency and AoE power. Fire shines when bosses aren't immune and scales extremely well with gear.

Arcane Frost

The highest single-target DPS frost build, utilizing Arcane Power and Presence of Mind while spamming Frostbolt. This is the optimal frost DPS spec for PvE-focused players.

Frostfire Hybrid

A flexible option that performs well on both fire-immune bosses and standard encounters. You still parse as fire while having strong frost capabilities, making this a great "set and forget" raid spec.

Winter's Chill Support

Every raid needs one Winter's Chill mage. While personal DPS is lower, the debuff increases frost crit chance by up to 10% for the entire raid. Ideally, the least-geared frost mage fills this role.

Understanding Mage Stats

Spell damage remains king, but stats must be evaluated properly.

Approximate Phase 4 stat values:

1% Hit ≈ 11 spell damage

1% Crit ≈ 8 spell damage

1 Intellect ≈ 0.18 spell damage

Hit cap is 16%. Any hit above that provides no benefit, so gearing past cap requires swapping pieces intelligently. Always evaluate upgrades based on overall stat value, not just raw spell damage.

Gear and Best-in-Slot Philosophy

Bloodvine gear is central to both fire and frost builds due to its set bonuses. Trinkets like Briarwood Reed, Mind Quickening Gem, and Nefarian's Tear provide massive long-term value and should be high-priority raid targets.

ZG is especially important in Phase 4 due to its short lockout and large number of relevant mage upgrades, making it one of the fastest gearing paths available.

Enchants That Actually Matter

Key enchants every mage should prioritize:

+30 Spell Power on weapon

ZG head/leg enchant (18 spell damage + 1% hit)

ZG shoulder enchant (18 spell damage)

Minor speed to boots is highly recommended for both raid mechanics and farming efficiency.

Rotations: Fire vs Frost

Fire Rotation

Stack five Scorch debuffs (usually six casts to account for resists)

Pop trinkets, cooldowns, and Combustion

Spam Fireball and manage Ignite carefully

In very short fights, skip Scorch entirely and immediately Fireball with cooldowns.

Frost Rotation

Yes, you mostly cast Frostbolt-but timing matters. Arcane Power should be activated after a Frostbolt is already in the air to maximize damage. Travel time matters more than most players realize.

Winter's Chill mages simply maintain Frostbolt uptime, using rank one Frostbolt only when multiple frost mages are present.

Consumables and World Buffs

Showing up without consumables is unacceptable if you care about performance. At minimum, bring:

Flask of Supreme Power

Greater Arcane Elixir

Mana and protection potions

Fire or Frost elixir

World buffs are non-optional in cheap WoW Classic 20th Anniversary Gold modern Classic. Dragon Slayer, Songflower, Dire Maul buffs, Darkmoon Faire, and Spirit of Zandalar all massively increase DPS and should be planned and booned in advance.
